Selestial Life Sunscreen & Insect Repellent Review

We love natural products in our household. Cleaners, toothpaste, lotion, baby products, you name it, and we probably have it. One thing we have been a little hesitant to try however, was sunscreen. Both my husband and I are extremely pale and typically buy the sunscreen that matches. This year with a baby in the household, finding a more natural sunscreen was a must have for us.

When My Green Fills offered to send me some of their natural sunscreen and insect repellent, we jumped at the opportunity.

Selestial is a company that focuses on to creating sustainable non-toxic products that are efficient and affordable. No toxic substances, no artificial ingredients, no unnecessary packaging, just products that work. Their product line includes laundry soap with refillable bottles, fabric softener, brightener, stain remover and more recently insect repellent and sunscreen. All products are cruelty free and vegan, making them a guilt free and eco-friendly solution.

You Are My Sunshine Natural Sunscreen

You Are My Sunscreen is Selestial’s natural sunscreen. It is:

• 100% Naturally Non-Toxic Mineral Sunscreen
• Safe For Kids & VERY EFFECTIVE
• Broad Spectrum 30+ SPF
• Ingredients: Water, Olive Oil, Carrot Oil, Zinc Oxide (Non-Nano), Flax Oil, Red Raspberry Seed Oil, Vitamin E, Essential Oils, and LOTS OF LOVE!
• Does NOT Contain: Any Hormone or Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals like: parabens, PABA, oxybenzone or retinyl palmitate

We were sent the full 4 oz size, and a mini 1.8 oz size. The full size comes in a metal tube with a squirt top, and the smaller size comes in a plastic tube with a squirt bottom and open top where you can attach a key ring.

We’ve used this sunscreen for a few weeks now doing a variety of activities, and we have yet to be burned! The smell of the product is light but pleasant. It doesn’t scream sunscreen or pool like other sunscreens do. I quite like the fragrance actually. Subtle, but present. If you’ve never used a more natural sunscreen with zinc oxide before, you’ll notice a few differences. The sunscreen is heavier in feeling than conventional sunscreen. Although not evident when dispensing, upon application the sunscreen feels thicker and takes more effort to run in. This is likely due to the non-nano zinc oxide present in the sunscreen which is largely responsible for the effectiveness. Similarly due to the presence of zinc, the sunscreen goes on much whiter and takes longer to rub in. This isn’t a knock on the product itself, just a reality of more natural sunscreen. Even though it is thicker, it isn’t difficult to rub in.

It is a little difficult to sunscreen a wiggly 10 month old, but I feel better with the knowledge that the product is all natural. We’ve used the sunscreen at a renaissance fair, on a hike, and at baby swim lessons. Neither me nor my son has burned. Upon application, you’ll want to wait approximately 15 minutes before getting wet, but that’s pretty standard with sunscreen.

My only complaint is that the bottle is fairly small. Using it on two people everyday it doesn’t last very long. Wearing sun protective clothing can help with how much you use (my baby gets a swim shirt for instance, and I’ll usually wear a hat for hiking). So if you plan on using the sunscreen often, you may need to buy multiple tubes.

The company does offer bundle deals on the sunscreen as well which provides quite a discount on the product overall.

I’ll Fly Away Insect Repellent

I’ll Fly Away is Selestial’s natural insect repellent. It is:

• Proven Non-Irritating, For Sensitive Skin
• Effective Against Mosquitos, Black Flies, No-see-ums and Most Bitting Insects

• Lasts Up to 6 Hours Per Application
• Ingredients: Catnip, Aloe Vera, Essential Oils (Eucalyptus, Citronella, Teatree, Lemongrass) and LOTS OF LOVE.

We were sent the full size 4 OZ bottle, and the smaller field size; both feature a spray top.

I had actually just purchased a different brand of natural insect repellent right before this, but I like this one much better. The scent, while fragrant, doesn’t scream citronella or bug spray. Although citronella is present in the spray, the blend of essential oils present blend nicely together, and you get notes of all of them.

A little goes a long way in terms of application – one spray and you’re good to go. For hiking or just casual walks, I would use one spray on myself, and one spray on my son and we’d both be good to go. Bugs aren’t a huge problem in my area of California, but we do have mosquitoes which aside from just being annoying, can also spread disease. Honestly, I didn’t all the mosquitoes until we ventured out at dusk one time without our spray, and we were bug magnets!

I love that it comes in 2 sizes. The large size we keep in our cabinet at home for planned trips, and the smaller field size fits perfectly in my purse or clutch for when I’m on the go. There’s been a few times I’ve caught myself outside later than expected, and was thankful to have the small field size already with me in my purse.

I’ll Fly Away Insect repellent is also available in a bundle as well, including both the full and portable size.

Overall, we were very pleased with the new products from My Green Fills. They are toxin free and very effective. The company itself has great ethics, and the products are extremely effective.
