Housework. It’s the bane of many a life. We do our best to make sure it is done and done right. Even if we don’t enjoy it, and most of us don’t, we do it because leaving it will have consequences. Putting off the housework, allowing mess to build up, can create a home for things that will make you ill. Plus, who can really relax in a messy home?
It has to be done, so you do it. You wash the floors, you hoover carpets. You wash the dishes, wipe the surfaces in the kitchen. You clear the shower drain, and even scrub the toilet. You even do those little areas that are hidden away, and you feel pleased with yourself. So who can blame you if you decide to make some labor-saving changes? You’ve earned the right to be a little bit lazy, surely.
When it comes to taking those short-cuts, it’s important to know one thing above all else: Do they actually work? Are you creating more work for yourself by trying to make less?
The Self-Cleaning Oven: No More Scrubbing?
Anyone who has ever tried to clean an oven will perk up immediately on hearing about the self-cleaning oven. The idea is wonderful! When you have been through the rather unpleasant experience of removing burned-on mess, you don’t want to repeat it. So you want a self-cleaning one, and you want it now. Don’t you?
No, you really don’t. The problem with these ovens is that they use a high-heat setting to scorch off those bits and stains. And when they do that, they place extreme pressure on their components. They all too often blow a fuse as a result. Manufacturers know this, there’s no way to stop it happening. Problem is, people are so keen to have a self-cleaning oven that it’s hard to sell a cooker without one. Keep scrubbing!
Garbage Disposal Units: Saving You A Trip?
Many homes now come with a garbage disposal unit next to the sink where we can put kitchen waste rather than putting it in the trash. Saving on a lot of trips out to the dumpster, you can even use what has been disposed of as fertilizer in the garden.
And the good news is that they save every bit as much labor as they claim to – as long as you are careful to put the right things down there. Keep fats, bones and carcasses out of there, and they’ll run fine.
Robot Vacuum Cleaners: Do They Do The Job You Hate?
Vacuuming is not fun, we can all agree. It gives you a workout, but it can also give you RSI if you have to do it often. And that’s why you find yourself reading reviews of vacuum cleaners from I Robot Corporation and others. You ask yourself: are they too good to be true?
The answer, thankfully, is no. As long as you get the right model, automated vacuum cleaners work and work well. You might, occasionally, need to do a round-up clean for completeness. But you’ll save yourself a lot of time and effort.
The key lesson to take is that, often, labor saving devices will save you a lot of effort. Sometimes they won’t – but a little bit of research online will save you from buying a lemon.
I agree with you. Self cleaning is rarely what it implies although it does help out.
