Pregnancy is such a fun time… choosing baby clothes, deciding on names, and showing off that beautiful baby bump! I wasted no time raiding my local maternity stores when I found out I was pregnant. I bought special maternity pants, shirts, even a scarf. But… maternity clothes are expensive, and a lot of them are really only good for the pregnancy part. Who wants to buy cute clothes that you only wear for 5 or 6 months?
With a few smart shopping decisions however, you can get some clothes that not only look beautiful on a growing baby belly, but transition to breastfeeding, postpartum and even years later chasing around toddlers.
This post is written in collaboration with LuLaRoe Susan Hanna. I received the following products at no cost to facilitate my post; however all opinions remain my own. For more information, see my full disclosure policy.
Lularoe is a direct sales clothing company that produces fashionable and fun clothing. Sellers, known as Fashion Consultants sell their clothing to you through pop ups, fairs, parties and through social media.
I’ll admit… it took me months, years even to hop on board the Lularoe train, and I wish I would have sooner. It is seriously the most comfortable clothes I have ever worn, AND they are still stylish and functional, and allow me to chase after my toddler and baby. Even though I wasn’t able to rock them during my own pregnancies, I am now rocking them postpartum.

5 Fashion Tips to Take you From Bump to Baby
Choose Stretchy
Stretchy is essential for any pregnancy wardrobe. Over the next few months you’ll be expanding (and not just your tummy). Not to mention battling exhaustian, morning sickness, fatigue… Stretchy waistbands are a must. (You’ll want this postpartum, too, trust me!)
Jeans with a stretch, skirts, dresses, leggings… whatever you want to wear, choose something with a little give.
Lularoe has an abundance of options for stretchy, comfortable waist bands including skirts and leggings.
Leggings are one thing that I just can’t get enough of. Available in a wide variety of colors and patterns, Lularoe has something to suit your style. The simple sizing system and stretchiness of the leggings eliminiate size confusion. I continued to wear my same size throughout pregnancy, although some women (particularly if you’re on the cusp of two sizes) found they were more comfortable going up a size. I didn’t find this necessary for me.
Leggings can be worn under or over the belly. I prefer to wear mine over the belly, and found that a belly band helped make them a little more comfortable. This combination is also great for breastfeeding, so you can lift up your shirt without showing more skin than your comfortable with.
Other great options include the Classic T, Perfect T, Amelia… and well, almost anything, really. Check with your fashion consultant the material of pieces you like to ensure they are stretchy.
Choose Flowy
I don’t know what it is about pregnancy, but something about it just screams flowy, loose pretty fabrics. I’m such a huge fan of dresses and skirts, and somehow loved them even more when I was pregnant. There’s just something about a baby bump in a dress that is so beautiful. Plus, I found I was so tired during the first trimester, it was nice only having to toss on one thing (that still looked great!).
For a loose flowy dress, try the Carly, Ana or Maria. Add a belt right above your belly if you’d prefer for definition.
To maximize wear while your breastfeeding, get a dress with a lower, strechy neckline.
The Maxi skirt is also a great versatile piece perfect for during pregnancy. The loose, flowy fabrics make it both comfortable and classy. Wear it under your bump for a longer skirt, or wear it above your bump for a shorter skirt that accentuates your bump. And bonus! You can also wear it as a dress, and it makes a wonderful nursing dress for when baby is here. Simply pull down to feed, and add a scarf or cardigan if you want more privacy.
Choose Fitted
So, exactly the opposite of the tip above, but choosing form fitting clothes can really accentuate a baby bump. Years ago, women hid their bellies in large boxy clothes, but pregnancy isn’t taboo today so feel free to show off your belly. Clothes that are more form fitting accentuate the belly.
Try the Julia dress, Cassie (worn sitting above the bump for maximum bumpability) and the Maria.
Choose Accessories
Adding a quick accessory can make all the difference in your wardrobe. Belts and ribbons can help accentuate a pregnant belly, sweaters and cardigans can pull an outfit together, and a simple scarf can quickly turn into a nursing cover (if you would like).
I pretty much lived in cardigans my second pregnancy (my first was during Summer!). They added layers without being bulky (bulk is not your friend during pregnancy) and kept me warm. Some women may find they need to go up a size during pregnancy if they need to button it, but they look great open as well.
I have a Sarah and it’s my most loved piece right now. Unfortunately, I didn’t get this until after both my kids were born, but it’s an amazingly versatile cardigan that transitions great into the postpartum period. Comfy and cozy, I also use it to help cover while I am nursing my daughter and as an extra cover for when I am wearing her.
Choose Comfortable
As much as you can, choose comfortable! You’ll be spending the next 9 months growing a tiny person, pushing them out of your body and then taking care of them. It’s exhausting, so choosing clothes that not only grow with you, but are comfortable is so important.
Even now, I’m grateful that clothes that I purchased during my pregnancy are stretchy and comfortable! They need to be since I spend a large amount of time nursing a baby while chasing around a toddler.
