Diffusing Essential Oils into the air can have wonderful aromatic health benefits. Not only do they make your home or office smell wonderful, but it can lift your mood, help you sleep, repel pests, and even ease aches and pains. I have a diffuser both downstairs and upstairs which is enough to cover our whole house (I also have jewelry, personal inhalers, and USB inhalers but that’s enough for a whole other post).

Luckily, there are a wide variety of diffusers on the market, ensuring there is one to match every taste and decor.

The following article contains affiliate links, meaning I will receive a small commission if you purchase something at no additional cost to you. For more information, see my full disclosure policy. Due to the large amount of diffusers listed, I have not personally used them all. Please see product descriptions for product reviews.

Ultrasonic/Humidifying Diffusers

Ultrasonic diffusers tend to be the most popular and readily available of the diffusers. Essential oils is dispersed over the top of another liquid (usually water), and then vibrated. The ultrasonic vibration breaks down the essential oils into tiny molecules that are more easily absorbed through the lungs.

Nebulizing Diffusers

Nebulizing diffusers use a jet of air to blow up a fine mist of essential oils. Since they are undiluted, this is often considered the most theraputic way to diffuse essential oils; for this same reason they also consume more of each oil.

Evaporative Diffusers

Evaporative Diffusers are simple and easy to use. A few drops of oil are placed onto a surface, and the scent fills the room as the oil evaporates into the air. This is the category that most personal and jewelry diffusers fall into, but that’s a whole different post.

Heat Diffusers

Heat diffusers use some sort of heat source (either electric or a candle) to disperse scents throughout the room. These methods are usually totally silent.
