How To Make Your Family Home More Secure

Having a child can completely transform your home in many ways. Child gates and corner protectors may be installed to make your home more child friendly. When thinking about inside dangers, many parents will also turn their sights to outside dangers that they may dismissed until now. If your currently thinking of stepping up your security, here are several methods you can consider to keep your new family safe and protected.

Install an alarm system

Owning a burglar alarm is still one of the most reliable safety approaches. They can come with a bit of a fee, but if you have home insurance a burglar alarm can help cut these costs, so it can pay itself off. There are multiple types of burglar alarm available on the market, all operating differently. Some will trigger when a door is opened and can be operated with a code. Others are motion sensitive and can be places anywhere where you think an intruder is likely to come in – a window or a back door. There are also panic detectors, which detect movement in a certain room – useful for some homes but not recommended if you have a pet!

Replace your old locks

How ancient are the locks on your front and back door? Why not get new ones fitted to feel that extra bit more secure. Some companies offer 24 hour locksmith services, so if a lock becomes broken at night and you are worried that someone could take advantage of it, don’t despair.
Extra locks such as deadbolts can be bought for further securing doors and windows.

Purchase outdoor security lighting

Installing motion sensitive lights round the front and back of your home can not only prevent you rummaging through your handbag for your key in the dark, it can also ward off potential intruders. No burglar wants to be seen (which is why many choose the night to target their victims), and a light will make it easier for you and neighbors to catch them in the act.

Curtains and blinds

You may view these as more of a privacy feature, but in fact they can also act as a great security method. Curtains or blinds will stop potential thieves from being able to spy on your belongings and eye up your property, as well as making a climb through the window or lot less inconspicuous.

Don’t advertise your home to would-be burglars

Many burglars nowadays have got smart and will prowl the internet and social media for people shouting about that two week holiday they’re about to go on, or that weekend away that they’re planning. Feel free to let people know of your experiences but do it after they’ve happened. If people know that you’re away, they’ll target your home.

You can also pay to hire someone to look after your home whilst you’re away – a house-sitter of sorts.

When it comes to babysitting it also helps to know that person or at least have a good reference, so that you can trust that person won’t do away with your valuables – or pass on information to someone on the outside!
