California is weird. Summer’s here are hot and that usually extends into the month of September, although usually it begins to cool down by the end of the month. This September though, it was hot until the very end. The last week in September ranged from the mid 90s to high 80s. So it was quite surprising when I woke up on October 2nd and it was cold… and raining.
Luckily, we found a swim diaper that will take us through the fall and winter seasons right back into summer.
The Nageuret swim diaper by Beau & Belle is designed to fit babies and toddlers from 6-36 pounds. It features a snap system that will be familiar to families that are already cloth diapering their little ones, allowing both the width and the length of the diaper to be customized for a perfect fit. They come in a variety of colors and styles suitable for baby’s many preferences. And since these are reusable, they are better for the environment, and better for your wallet.
The snaps on the diaper are easy to adjust to fit to your child’s size. There are two sets of snaps available lengthwise allowing you to adjust the length to three different sizes. A variety of snaps on the waist allow it to be made bigger or small depending on the needs of baby. My 25 pound 33 inch tall one year old used the lowest snaps and second to last snaps on the width. I did find the direction of the snaps to be a little strange. With most cloth diapers (and disposable) I have encountered you pull the back of the diaper forward and snap on the front; this one I had to pull the front of the diaper backwards to snap. This configuration doesn’t interfere with the performance of the diaper, but it did feel strange.
When you open up the diaper, you’ll notice a big difference between normal cloth diapers in that there is no insert or way to add inserts for absorbency. That’s because swim diapers aren’t made to absorb liquid. If they did absorb liquid, the diaper would immediately become saturated with water as soon as baby got in the water. Instead, it’s simply made to contain solids.
Waste is simply knocked off into the toilet making clean up simple. For a messier poop, a diaper sprayer can also be used although it’s not necessary to have. When baby does poo, I take him inside and take off his diaper, spray it off, and if the fun hasn’t ended, I’ll put it back on him. Easy.
Caring for the diaper is easy. Since it doesn’t have any absorbency, it doesn’t need to go through quite the routine that normal cloth diapers go through. Beau & Belle suggests washing the diaper in cold water and tumble drying low. I’ll usually stick it in for the prewash of my cloth diapers, and then take it out for the main wash. It can also easily be washed with normal clothing.
Overall, we love the Nageuret swim diaper. It’s adjustable size ensures that you can use it for the entire swim season and even longer which is a huge bonus for us, since last season I had to buy 2 different diapers over the course of the summer. Both cloth and disposable diaper users alike will be delighted in how easy it is to use and maintain, and the cute prints are appropriate for babies with a variety of tastes.
The Nageuret swim diaper can be purchased on Amazon.com (affiliate) or directly on the Beau & Belle website.
